Monarchy attracts £500 million a year from overseas tourists
Overseas tourists spend half a billion pounds a year visiting all things royal when they come to Britain, the first survey of its kind shows. By Caroline Gammell Published: 4:07PM BST 28 Jul 2010
Monarchy attracts £500 million a year from overseas touristsy Russians, Brazilians and Malaysians are the most likely to visit places linked to the Royal Family.
The Tower of London – where Anne Boleyn was beheaded - is the most popular royal attraction, with 2.38 million foreign visitors last year.
British Tourost travel the word but are ignorant of home gemsFalling pound fails to boost tourism London is most expensive city in world for culture, survey shows ,St Paul’s Cathedral which held the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales, saw 1.8 million overseas visitors in 2009.
Buckingham Palace attracted 402,000 visitors even though it is only open for eight weeks a year, while Windsor Castle saw 987,000 foreign visitors.
The survey, by VisitBritain, analysed information from 50,000 people who took part in the 2009 International Passenger Survey.
Of the 30 million overseas visitors who came to Britain last year 5.8 million visited a castle, 5 million a historic house and 6.4 million a religious monument such as a cathedral.
In a separate questionnaire, 25,000 people were asked to rank a series of 15 iconic pictures of Britain and the Queen came third.
Last year, tourists from other countries spent £4.6 billion on “culture and heritage” – including theatres, galleries, pubs and premier football.
In todays Telgraph and some in here would destory it all talk about shooting themsleves in the foot, tourism is our third biggest industry it helps pay our bills and employs many |

I've been saying this for years. They bring in more than they take out. And if you had a president you wouldn't have the benefits. Just the expenses.
So have I in here it has not gone unnoticed that this who insult her and call for her removal know so little about her or our history and heritage, but then again most what they spout is the rhetoric of others they take as gospel and repeat, or just on a silly wind up that fails everytime |

One wonders how happy these dreamers would have been with a president Blair or Brown or worse still, Cameron/clegg.

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, I'm a long way from home, and if you don't like me then leave me alone, I eat when I'm hungry, I drink when I'm dry, If the "moonshine" don't get me I'll live till I die.

The only warm feeling the envious and ignorant would be knowing they have upset the Royalists until it dawned on them how much damage they had also done to themselves, half a billion a year income from abroad is an awful lot to throw away |

There you are again speaking rubbish Old Git. So the working people of this country, who made the Coutry grat through their Labour during the Industrial Revolution mean nothing, the working class lads fighting in the Imperialistic Wars (Napoleonic and world wars) mean nothing. Only you monarchy has contributed to this country then. |

Was watching a programme last night called The Queen and this one covered the time under Heth/Wilson when the monarchy ws struggling for money and the nation was struggling in respect of working class people demanding over 20% wage increases and getting nearly that.
During this time Anne married Mark Phillips and was attacked at gunpoint by a nutter who actually wounded a couple of her bodygurds and could have killed her. The Queen was in Indonesia (I think) at the time and I was particularly caught by the moment she turned with a tear and said that members of her family were targets for people with guns and yet could not support their national role. The other side to that was the events of the strikers who had no such potential dangers to personal life and were demanding and getting astronomical wage increases just for downing tools...which the Monarchy could not do.
Credit to Wilson, he too saw the irony and managed to get her an increase to the Civil List. But it was an interesting juxatpositon. |

It's like a Nation-wide Stockholm syndrome.
They come here with an army and say, "Everything is now ours. If you argue, we'll kill you. You and your progeny shall work on our behalf for eternity." And, somehow, the beaten people come to adore their servitude. They love it. They revel in it and boast of their slavery. "Look at us, we are subject to the will of warlords. We love it."
Of course, it's not quite that simple. There was a carrot dangled, too. The carrot of patronage. A great long line of lackeys, hands out, willing to accept the king's coin in exchange for squeezing some work out of the locals.
Is that too harsh? |
