I'm sorry if I am running counter to the sentiment of most of these posts, but what is it about this country and the conceit that accompanies the term "Special Relationship"?
When Winston Churchill coined the term, it was part of his campaign of currying favour with the Americans. Remember, we had the begging bowl out because we were bankrupt and the Americans mistook the post war Labour government for Communists.
Now, we seem to be at it again for similar reasons – trying to gain economic advantage.

Neither the Americans then nor the Indians now ever saw us in that light. The only thing the Americans gain from the relationship with the UK is military intelligence. Everything else is on American terms.
As far as India is concerned, they see the UK as a gateway to Europe because of our EU membership.
That would seem a far more rational basis on which to conduct the relationship.

Cut the cords and be done with, independence is a satisfying thing, it would do no harm whatsoever to educate these so called superpowers to be reminded that co-operation is a 2 way enterprise.

And have them remind us that we are nothing without them when they invade and occupy us in retaliation?

That's a chance I would be willing to take, a "special relationship" with the states depend on who, at the time is more beneficial to them, in my opinion, that is outright bigotry and selfishness, as for India, well, we helped build it into a democratic and workable nation, should they now start putting affadavits and riders  on a relationship because it suits them now, then I'm afraid I would tell them to do the other thing.

We can't go it alone because we aren't a superpower and would be vulnerable to the superpowers whom we snubbed.

So if we are to move on from the US we need to strike up friendships and start doing business with the emerging superpowers so they watch our backs.

Thank God you're not a diplomat then!

I have never claimed to be, but the good and obvious thing is, you know exactly where you stand with me, no ambiguity or double meanings (read shite) which is what politicians are full of and why the world is as it is today.

And that is an admirable quality to have.

But unfortunately in the world of politics and international relations it won't get you very far.

And that is why I am an engineer and bloody good at my job, hence my cynicism with those who claim to have MY interests and the rest of the worlds at heart. (YOU WILL TAKE NOTE HERE, THAT THERE IS NOT ONE POOR POLITICIAN IN THE WORLD TODAY)

right, so the events of 30 years ago bother you, but the fact the last 14 years have almost brought the country to its knees and destroyed us doesnt register on your radar..........ill say it again, the depth, breadth and scale of the incompetence and corruption of the last government dwarfs any other governemnt in the last 250 years, unarguably.

Or are you another ctoo, unable to see any wrong in nu labour ?

It's my opinion and no, before you ask, I am not going to post "evidence" because there usually isn't any, or you can go and find it for yourself. Why should I do your research?

I fully agree Blair Brown and their incompetent mob will go down in the history books for all the wrong reasons, the most incompetent corrupt to the core control freaks in living memory
